Kaprun is a ski resort located in the Pinzgau region of Austria. With links to the winter sports resort of Zell am See, Kaprun was initially viewed as a village for mountain guides. Then in 1893, a pioneer named Nikolaus Gassner opened up access to the famous Sigmund Thun Klamm gorge. Even today, it still presents a natural spectacle for visitors to marvel at. 1955 saw the start of construction on the “Tauernkraftwerke” hydroelectric power stations. These plants provide Austria's main energy supply. The advent of tourism in the 20th century brought skiers to Kaprun from all over the world.
The ski destination for all snow sports lovers
Today, the winter sports resort has 55 km of skiing terrain (the Maiskogel) that can be accessed from the village, and there are 21 runs in total. It has comprehensive sporting facilities, such as the outstanding Kaprun sports centre. The following sporting activities are offered in the resort: wonderful cross-country trails, snowboarding pistes and even ski carving: the choice is yours! Thanks to the link with Zell am See, skiers and snowboarders can enjoy over 130 km of pistes as well as access to the snowpark and half-pipe. All along the route, high-altitude restaurants and bars offer a welcome in a friendly atmosphere.

The Klizsteinhorn Glacier in Kaprun is the only skiable glacier in the state of Salzburg, offering holidaymakers the chance to ski all year round. Beginners can earn their stripes on the long wide pistes, whilst experienced skiers will speed down the competition run which is open to use. Fans of freeriding are also well catered for with the natural tubes at Langwied where they can practise lots of jumps and tricks.
